DD and the Princess
Christmas day, DD's corral was done, we had decided to place her next to the Princess, who was a racehorse but due to injuries, is now home. As we led DD over to the house across from the pasture, it struck me that poor little DD has had many changes in her 3 years of life....and although she is particular about certain things, she does not complain about anything. The two girls became easy fast friends, not fighting or squealing across the fence. It was as if the Princess knew that DD was young and fragile, and DD knew that the once fierce, fire breathing race horse is broken. Both will heal, and both will settle into their new lives, and draw strength from one another. Life on our little farm is far from opulent; we have hot wire fences, and lack comfortable stalls with soft bedding...It is also cold in our part of the country during the winter months...But we have lots of fluffy warm blankets, an endless supply of hay and yummy well water. As I feed the girls their mash in the mornings, I am greeted with pricked ears and nickers of welcome, DD's large brown eyes are no longer dull and sad, they are now warm and welcoming. Princess once again holds her head up and those lovely dark eyes still contain the look of eagles, although her feet hurt.....Our journey together has just started...

DD's new friend
DD spent almost a week at the neighbors in a small paddock so that we could get to know eachother..But it is time to move home and meet her new friend..Princess is fresh off of the track, and lonely for company. The girls get along very well, no nipping or kicking. DD had her front hooved trimmed, but will not allow anyone near her hinds...So we will play the friendly game until she is comfortable. DD is a great eater, not picky at all, loves her hay and beet pulp. It is cold, so DD wears two blankets..

Its coooold here!
When you come from south Texas, it is very shocking to arive in the Pacific Northwest, very cold here..We went shopping for two nice warm blankies...Having never had blankets on before, DD was not sure she wanted one on, but a little petting and coaxing changed that! Now she has two on, she is warm and dry! DD is still a little shy, but will meet me at the gate, she knows that I am the food lady! She has all of the hay she can eat, and likes her beet pulp in the mornings...At at 14 hands, I am confident that she will grow enough for me to ride eventually, but we are not in a hurry. She is letting me pick up her front feet now without fear...Today, we will take pictures of her with the new blankets..

A long road home...
Deer boarded the big trailer in Texas on Saturday the 15th of December 2012...She had no idea where she was going, but she willingly loaded up, a 2000 mile trip! It is winter here in the pacific northwest, so she has nice warm blankets waiting for her when she gets here...Life will be different here, lots of attention and food. Big sister Buffy is waiting, anxious to be bossy as usual! Deer is very green broke so we will take it slow and steady. This blog is about our adventures together!
